Quick answer

For a first trip, build around Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai, then add either Chongqing or Zhangjiajie only when the trip is long enough. Two or three nights per base usually creates a better trip than collecting cities.

1

10-day foundation

  • Beijing: 3 nights.
  • Xi’an: 2 nights.
  • Shanghai: 3 nights.
  • Use the remaining time for arrival and intercity travel.
2

14-day extension

  • Add Chongqing for a dense urban, food and river-city contrast.
  • Or add Zhangjiajie for a nature-focused finish with more weather sensitivity.
  • Avoid adding both unless the route and transport timing remain comfortable.
3

Booking order

  • Confirm the entry rule and international route.
  • Book long-distance rail legs.
  • Choose hotels near the transport and sights you will actually use.
  • Reserve time-sensitive attractions last.
